Wheaton has been 8-35 in the last 5 years with what will be the programs 3rd HC in 6 years after this hire. Either somebody making bad hiring decisions or somebody is sabotaging the Wheaton community (bad decisions).

Either somebody making bad hiring decisions or somebody is sabotaging the Wheaton community (bad decisions). Wheaton isn't exactly the easiest place to win at, the demographics of the area are not a football hotbed (Kennedy is down the street and we all know what their program is like). Einstein is nearby too and has had a bit more success (though its demographics are a tad more balanced), but it's taken a lot of work. 3 coaches in 6 years isn't crazy turnover given the second coach was only there one year. Under the first coach Saunders, Wheaton regressed from a poor to mediocre program to one in the basement (why they did so I can't say). Schwartzback had the resume, just bad luck that a job he preferred more opened up the next year. You're never going to compete for states at Wheaton but here's hoping they can find someone committed to the rebuild. The Knights do at least have one of the newest stadiums in the county as their building was renovated right before the pandemic.

Their varsity would be beat by most of the JV programs in FREDCO.

Damien Powell interviewed for the Wheaton job. He won’t last. This ain’t PG county or that surrounding community. I’ll assume he knows this since he went to Sherwood but the dynamics of Sherwood/Olney and Wheaton are similar to Flowers/Springdale and Wheaton. A complete different world.

Big point being there is no direct feeder. Many kids going to Wheaton have never played organized ball. Not an enticing place to recruit talent either. I also don’t see in general a large support for athletics from the school.

However, Wheaton is in the DCC and has a good STEM magnet program. Not saying it would be an easy turnaround, but there are things in place to attract student athletes. At one point in the recent past, Wheaton was essentially one of the lowest performing athletic programs in every sport. Once the new building was opened (along with the STEM/magnet program you mentioned), Wheaton has been able to field relatively competitive teams in a number of sports that were once thought impossible at that school. The success is relative for sure - by and large, Wheaton is not competing for state championships. But a number of sports that were once at the bottom of the MoCo standings are now at least closer to the middle of the pack in some years. There are also individuals finding very high levels of success in sports that Wheaton never had success - track, swimming, tennis. It is still an extremely uphill battle to make Wheaton competitive, but it is conceivable that Wheaton can improve to the point of being toward the top of the bottom third of the county. Kennedy has had two (relatively) successful football runs since the turn of the century, one in the Melvin Harris era and one in Fall 2022 when the Cavs were around .500. Einstein has been able to be mildly competitive despite similar DCC challenges. Since the new building was completed, Wheaton is now the #2 choice for students in the DCC (after Blair). Not all (or many) of these students are "football types" but this is a huge change from when Wheaton was the lowest choice prior to the new campus.

Why is Powell leaving CH Flowers? I know they had the unfortunate situation with an ineligible player last year.
That would be a very interesting hire for Wheaton.

A lurker could say Coach Powell "... is leaving CH Flowers..." is a little premature. If all these coaching interviews of Powell are true, could he be just testing the waters.... Powell is the president of the PGCo football coaches association. Yes Flowers had the ineligible player (s) situation last year but a year or two before he was suspended for a year or two over illegal practices that I submit nearly eveyone did ( pre-season camp). It's just that a kid encountered a serious medical issue at Flowers' camp at Shepherd U. that thrush Powell into the sanction highlights. Maybe, just maybe Powell has grown wiery of PG coaching.
