My Top Ten
As of February 17th. One game left in the season before county championship and playoffs.
1. Magruder (17-2) - Nine game winning streak. One of the easier schedules in the county, but did beat Blake this season.
2. Blake (16-3) - Ten game winning streak, and won arguably the most difficult division in MCPS.
3. Kennedy (15-4) - Eight game winning streak, but had an easier road than most.
4. B-CC (15-4) - Huge win over Whitman to split the season series and take the division. Five game winning streak.
5. Whitman (15-4) - Consistent program throughout the season. Can compete with anyone.
6. Paint Branch (15-4) - Can compete with any team. Much harder schedule than its 4A North Region foe Kennedy, but did lose to the Cavs this season.
7. Sherwood (14-5) - Two straight losses in division and was swept by PB. But can compete with anyone.
8. Wootton (14-5) - Two straight losses to 4A West powers B-CC and Whitman. Will compete with the top teams in the 3A West.
9. Richard Montgomery (11-8) - After a strong start, Rockets have lost 5 of 6 and 6 of 9.
10. Quince Orchard (11-8) - Loss to NW snapped a modest four game win streak. QO is a step below the top 8 teams.
Coming up - final regular season games on 2/20. Best games:
Wootton at Blake
Magruder at Sherwood
QO at Kennedy
Division Winners
Congrats to the five division winners:
B-CC - Central
QO - West
Blake - East
Kennedy - South
Magruder - North
Regions - Many of the region seedings have been set prior to the final regular season game.
4A West I - Looks like this is Frederick's region to lose.
1. Frederick (locked)
2/3: Urbana and TJ are both 10-9.
4: Northwest 9-10
5. SV (locked)
6. Clarksburg (locked)
*Urbana and TJ split the season series.
TJ finishes the season against N. Hagerstown while Urbana plays Man Valley.
Northwest can make it a three way tie if both TJ and Urbana lose their finales and NW beats Northwood.
4A West II - Whitman and B-CC appear headed for a third game together to decide the region.
1/2: B-CC and Whitman are both 15-4.
3. QO (locked)
4/5: Churchill and WJ are both 9-10.
6. Gaithersburg (locked)
*B-CC and Whitman split the season series. B-CC finishes with Gburg and Whitman has Damascus.
*Churchill and WJ split the season series. Churchill finishes with Clarksburg and WJ has SV.
4A North II - Kennedy and PB appear to be the best teams as RM has faltered in the second half of the season and Springbrook lacks consistency.
1. Kennedy 15-4
2. PB 15-4
3. RM (locked)
4. Springbrook (locked)
5. Einstein (locked)
6. Wheaton (locked)
*Kennedy owns the tiebreaker over PB. Kennedy finishes with QO and PB has Wheaton.
*RM is only one game ahead of Springbrook but owns the tiebreaker by sweeping the season series vs. Springbrook.
4A South I - Laurel is the clear cut favorite to advance. It will be interesting to see if Northwood can compete with the Spartans and/or Northwestern.
1. Laurel (locked)
2. Northwood 7-12
3. Northwestern 5-13
4. Blair (locked)
5. Reservoir 2-18
6. High Point 0-18
Northwestern and HP have not reported their full 20 game schedules, so I am unsure who their final opponents are. But Northwestern could potentially force a coin flip for the 2/3 seed with Northwood by winning their final two games if Northwood loses to Northwest. Similarly, High Point could conceivably win its final two games to force a coin flip for the 5/6 seed with Reservoir.
3A West II - The top four teams in this region are as deep as any region in the state. The region semifinals and finals will be very competitive and any of the four teams could advance.
1. Magruder (locked)
2. Blake (locked)
3. Sherwood 14-5
4. Wootton 14-5
5. Damascus (locked)
6. Rockville (locked)
7. Watkins Mill (locked)
Magruder is just one game up on Blake, but owns the tiebreaker.
Sherwood holds the tiebreaker over Wootton.
Interestingly, the final games of the season include Magruder-Sherwood and Blake-Wootton.
2A West II - Mixed regions with teams from four different counties can sometimes provide wild results. Poolesville may not be able to hang with the top half of MoCo but has shown the ability to beat the bottom half. Maybe the Falcons can compete with out of county 2As.
1. Century (locked)
2. Wilde Lake 10-10
3. Poolesville 9-10
4. Southern-AA 7-10
5. Hammond 7-11
Still plenty of potential movement in the #2-5 seeds.
County Championship Race
MCPS holds a county championship game between the end of the regular season and the beginning of the playoffs. The game will feature the two MCPS teams with the best regular season winning percentage. One caveat; it cannot feature two teams from the same region.
As of 2/16:
Magruder, at 17-2 has clinched one of the spots in the County Championship game.
Blake (16-3) is ineligible for the game since the Bengals are in the same region as Magruder.
That leaves the following teams vying for the final spot:
Whitman, B-CC, Kennedy and Paint Branch are all 15-4.
Final games: Whitman-Damascus, B-CC-Gburg, Kennedy-QO, PB-Wheaton
Even if all 15-4 lose (doubtful considering their opponents), the two 14-5 teams (Wootton and Sherwood) are ineligible since they are in the same region as Magruder.
