I noticed Damascus competed in 2A in football but now in basketball they are in 3A. Since when do schools change classifications during the school year? I don't remember that happening before.

Because not every school in the state offers every sport, the MPSSAA organizes classifications by sport now rather than school. Example: there are 180 schools who play football and 6 classes, so there are 30 in each class. We have 200 schools who play basketball and 4 classes of basketball, so there are 50 in each class.
Sports like Field Hockey only have about 120 schools since the city and PG county and other places dont offer it. If they used school classification there may only be 10 total 1A schools who offer FH. This way makes it more equal in number of games needed to win a state championship.
