The regular season is about a third of the way completed, and we have been able to see how many of the teams stack up so far this season.
Some big games coming up in the next week or two with division games in MoCo.
4A West I
Seneca Valley and Clarksburg have struggled out of the gate. Both will find it difficult to navigate through this region, which is highlighted at the top by Frederick. Northwest may have a chance to make a run though.
Best wins so far:
Seneca Valley owns a 69-66 win over Springbrook.
None of the three MoCo teams in this region have beaten a team with a winning record yet.
4A West II
A very competitive and balanced region. Right now, B-CC and Whitman are at the top of the standings with Churchill, QO and WJ lurking just above .500. Gaithersburg has struggled to replace the production of the graduated seniors from last year.
Best wins so far:
B-CC sits at 6-1 before break, but the Barons' only win over a team over .500 is a 63-51 victory over WJ.
QO is 4-3 but has yet to beat a team with a winning record.
Whitman is 6-1 and has wins over Kennedy, Landon and Churchill on its resume.
WJ is 4-3 and has a 63-51 win over Wootton.
Churchill is 4-3 and defeated Wootton 59-57. All three Dawg losses were to good teams by single digits.
4A North II
Paint Branch and RM are off to good starts and likely will battle it out with Kennedy for the region. Springbrook is hovering just below .500. Einstein and Wheaton will likely have an uphill battle to compete.
Best wins so far:
Kennedy (5-2) has just one win over a team with a winning record, a 69-61 victory over WJ.
RM (6-1) has the best resume so far, with wins a win over WJ and handing both Sherwood and B-CC their lone losses.
PB is 6-1, but all six victories are over teams with records below .500.
Springbrook (3-4) has had a tough schedule so far, and boasts wins over Kennedy and QO. Three of the Blue Devils' four losses are to teams that are currently 6-1.
4A South I
Arguably one of the weakest regions in the 4A, but one team will advance. Laurel and Northwestern from PG County are the only teams above .500 heading into the break, and they are both only 3-2. Northwood and Blair both appear to not be very competitive within MoCo, but may be able to compete in this region. Reservoir has also struggled, but may be able to give this group some fits in the playoffs. High Point is not very strong.
Best wins so far:
Northwood (2-5) has beaten two teams that are winless so far and Blair (0-7) has yet to win.
3A West II
Four teams are toward the top of the region and will battle all season long and into the postseason. Blake, Magruder, Wootton and Sherwood are all top ten teams in the county. Damascus, Watkins Mill and Rockville will all struggle to compete in this top heavy region.
Best wins so far:
Magruder (6-1) beat Blake 61-57 and its only loss is to Wootton.
Blake (6-1) handed PB its only loss (57-48) and also owns a win over QO. Its only loss is to Magruder.
Sherwood (6-1) dealt Whitman its only loss (67-48) and also beat Churchill. Its only loss is to 6-1 RM in OT.
Wootton (5-2) has wins over Magruder and RM and its two losses are to Churchill and WJ.
2A West II
Century and Southern (AA) are both off to good starts. Poolesville is .500 and may be able to hang against out of county competition. Hammond and Wilde Lake are both similarly around .500 in what should be a competitive if not great region.
Best wins so far:
Poolesville is 3-3; all three losses are to good teams. The Falcons' best win so far is over Damascus (48-36).
