Fort Hill joined the states 10 time champions club with 45-21 pounding of Mountain Ridge in a game like last weeks win over Cambridge that wasn't nearly as close as the score. It was the third straight and eighth title in the last 10 (excluding Covid year 2020) years for Big Red.
Sentinels received the opening kickoff and started quick. First play of the game, Jabril Daniels breaks a tackle and runs 63 yards to the house. 7-0 FH. Ridge strikes right back as QB Will Patterson finds Andrew Ketterman for a 73 yd pass on the Miners first play, 7-7. Daniels then ran 67 yds for another score, but it was called back by a block in the back. FH was forced to punt and after a nice return and a hit out of bounds, MR was set up at the FH 25. But four plays only gained nine yards and the Sentinels took back over at their 16. Fort Hill had a 4th and two at their 36 and Daniels broke off a 64 yard run to go up 14-7. With 3:28 left in the 1st qtr, Daniels scores from 42 yards out to make it 21-7 after 1. Daniels had 211 yds and three TD's in the 1st qtr. At the 8:35 mark of the 2nd, Daniels scores his 4th TD from 2 yds out to make it 28-7. After another Ridge 3 n out, FH QB Deshawn Brown hit Tristan Ross with a 32 yd pass to set up a 38 yd run to the house by Ross to make it 35-7. On the last play of the 1st half, Daniels scored his 5th TD on a 59 yd run, his 34th of the season to set a school record, to make the half time score 42-7. Daniels ran 18 times for 292 yds, a state record for a championship game in the first half.
FH mixed in subs with the starters and the 3rd qtr ended 42-7. Daniels, a junior, played only FH's first drive of the second half and finished with 303 yds on 21 carries. Miners got on the board in the 4th on a 33 yd run by Austin Frost against FH subs, XP was missed to make it 42-13. Sentinels added a 29 yd FG by Cooper Silber to make it 45-13 with 5:40 left in the game. With less than three minutes left, Miners score on a 1 yd run. FH then runs the clock out to make the final 45-21. Daniels finished the season with 1823 yds and 34 TD's.
After the initial touchdown pass, Miners gained just 59 yds on 26 plays against the Sentinel starting defense.
Fort Hill will take a 21 game winning streak into next season. Since taking over as head coach in 2020, Zack Alkire is 40-2 with three state titles.
