The twelve MPSSAA finalists boast a 136-2 record versus MPSSAA opponents outside of themselves. Broadneck lost to Old Mill, 31-28, and Huntingtown lost to Patuxent, 41-31. Otherwise, spotless versus everyone else in the MPSSAA.

Whoa Nellie! Something is in the air as Neutral Observer was in fact observed on this site. I can't wait for his write up, but I will get this party started. Ps. Mamba, we haven't forgot about your write-up too.
4A 3 Wise (11-1) v 5 Broadneck (11-2)-What no QO or NW or Flowers, but there is still Wise. That ship didn't sail, and the Pumas are back in the final. Like Big Macs, fries, and sweet tea at McDonalds, they are steady. I admittedly don't know much about the Bruins, but they did beat a good Churchill team at Churchill. I think Wise is doing what Wise does best, and thats win. Sorry but the Bruins are going down, but I see this as a close hard-fought game. Wise in overtime.
4/3A 3 North Point (13-0) v 4 Mervo (12-1)-Just hand NP the damn trophy now. The QO of southern Maryland is a force to be dealt with. That D is dominating with an O that gets it done. Sorry, Mervo, but you had a nice run. NP by 2 TD's.
3A 1 Oakdale (13-0) v 3 Linganore (12-1)-The battle of New Market, FREDCO, I-70, Rt. 144, Rt. 75, or just the local McDonalds to include the new one being opened next to Oakdale HS. This game is going to have it all. The score will go back and forth, up and down, and sideways when you least expect it. The best athlete on the field is the Oakdale QB who can play anywhere. One of the top RB's in Maryland is also on the field for Linganore. If the Lancer QB and WR's can play at a high level, that will allow the Lancer running game to control the clock and limit an explosive Oakdale O from scoring at will. A lot of great high school football players will be playing their last game, and yes this will be a great game to watch. Does the old coach have something up his sleeve? Linganore in a close one, and I mean really close.
2A 2 Decatur (13-0) v 5 Huntingtown (10-2)-Could this be the best Decatur team of all time? The best Eastern Shore team of all time? Well, time to prove it. As for the Hurricanes, they have been here before. Sorry, OC boys but you aren't in Kansas anymore. Huntingtown by 10.
2/1A 1 Calvert (12-1) v 3 Dunbar (10-0)-The Poets are back, but did they ever leave? Way too many athletes on the 2A level for the Poets to lose IMHO. BUT, Calvert did play North Point close, and Patuxent did play Dunbar close. Another great game but I think Dunbar with its speed and athletes all over the place will be too much for Calvert. Dunbar by 14.
1A 1 Fort Hill (12-0) v 2 Mountain Ridge (11-1)-Lets save gas and play this game out west. No love here between these programs. Hey rifle deer season started today, but you all want to play football, really. Game will be close for a while but expect the Sentinels to wear down the Miners. Ft. Hill by 17.

Game Schedules: 2A Thu 7pm 2A/1A Fri 4pm 4A Fri 7:30pm 1A Sat 12pm 4A/3A Sat 3:30pm 3A Sat 7pm Not mad at this line up one bit. Saturday is looking to have 3 banger games. Oakdale and Linganore as the Main Event makes perfect sense to me. It's basically Fredco version of QO/NW meeting in the State Championship down to even the colors. Also, Dunbar makes history with a win on Friday with most state championships all time in Maryland, correct?

And QO couldn’t even get past NW! Wise will beat BN in regulation, and I’ll say they do it by 10.

Aside from 4A, where there was chaos, 4 of the 5 other title games feature the top two ranked teams in their class after week 9 in the MPSSAA Top 50, with NP-Mervo - 4/3A, Oakdale-Linganore - 3A, Dunbar-Calvert - 2/1A, and Fort Hill-Mountain Ridge - 1A. And, Decatur was 1 in 2A, MMA 2, Huntingtown 3. That Decatur-MMA game last night would have made a helluva state championship game. Just like last year, but the script got flipped. We’ll find out next week if that was the only potential title game matchup that was a victim of seeding. x.com/aka_themamba/status/1719112544487415841?s=46&t=FEchQxBVqCoRJhd_gca09A

In addition to the Decatur-MMA redux, there were two other great sequels last night after a classic last post-season.
Mervo and Perry Hall played for a third time in as many post-seasons, and last night’s 6-0 donnybrook mirrored that of last season’s affair, except is was the Gators escaping with a 7-6 win. A slobberknocker. Ray Moore III’s 73 yard TD pass to De’sean Thorton was it. Perry Hall’s score on their first drive last year was enough to do it for them, with the Mustangs failed kick attempt. But since, the Mustangs held the Gators scoreless for 7.7 quarters.
Patuxent jumped out to a 13-0 lead over Dunbar in last year’s 2/1A final, before the Poets scored 22 unanswered. Last night, Patuxent held 14-6 lead, before the Poets went on a 30-7 run, and hung on to a 36-29 victory.

While his team fell short in Linganore last night, Northern junior Miles Halbert shattered the MPSSAA all-time single-season receiving yards record, with his 233 yards giving him 1,955 on the season, surpassing Blaine Price’s mark of 1,749, set in 2012 at Brunswick. Halbert’s 12 receptions vaulted him to 104 on the season, the fourth best mark in MPSSAA history, and his two touchdown receptions gave him 19 on the season, tied for seventh best in MPSSAA history with four others, including Maryland’s Corey Dyches (Potomac).

4A: 3 Wise vs. 5 Broadneck Massey Prediction: Wise 35-19
This is the 7th season the state finals have been held at Navy Stadium, and to this point Navy Stadium has seen either QO or Wise in the 4A final every year. The two faced off in three years, and have each had two bouts against different opponents. Neither team has lost except to the other. The latest challenger is Broadneck, who's gotten here by stingy defense and capitalizing on opponents' mistakes. Wise though may be their stiffest test yet, as the Pumas have speed just about everywhere. Their QB is young but poised and is good at getting the ball to receivers in space. The defense is just as fast as the offense and swarms to the ball. The Pumas offense hasn't been immune to mistakes and turnovers (both of WJ's scores against them came via turnover), but so far their offense has been prolific enough to make up for any slips. I'd love to be proven wrong for the third week in a row, but I just don't see Broadneck's defense being complete enough to shut down Wise. The Bruins should bring a crowd though, given that Navy stadium is a 10-20 minute drive for them. Motivation should not be an issue for Wise as the last Puma graduating class to not witness a football state title was the Class of 2012; I know the 2024 seniors will be hell bent on making sure they aren't the ones to end this streak. Wise 38-14
4A/3A: 3 North Point vs. 4 Mervo Massey Prediction: North Point 35-14
Who ordered the old school slugfest? Points may be hard to come by here and I'd definitely take the under 45.5, hell I could see both teams combining for less than the 35 Massey sees NP putting up. A lot's already been said about North Point, let's turn our attention to Mervo. The Mustangs have put up a defensive masterclass this season, not giving up more than 20 points in any game (and that's with playing Dunbar!) and posting 8 shutouts. Their most impressive performance came just last week, when they blanked an undefeated Perry Hall team who was averaging 42 points per game. Honestly, another 6-0 final score is not out of the realm of possibility for this game. Mervo will be studying the Blake film and their first order of business will be finding a way to contain NP's 3 headed monster at RB. If NP has a weakness, it's at QB; they often go without one. Their full-time QB only played in the first drive against Blake and struggled. Kaleb Hart tosses a good ball, but if you force NP to have to pass regularly, things could get dicey. This will be extremely close, but I'm leaning Mustangs in this one. If it comes down to passing, I'm taking the team with the veteran QB, in this case Ray Moore III. Mervo 15-14
3A: 1 Oakdale vs. 2 Linganore Massey Prediction: Linganore 35-29
This is what the new playoff format was made for. A clash of neighborhood rival powers, I know the New Market area will be buzzing all week and would expect this to be the craziest environment Navy Stadium has seen yet in the state finals. Both teams will be highly motivated beyond just the rivalry aspect: Oakdale does not want to squander two straight finals trips, while Linganore is starting to get a reputation for not pulling through on the biggest stage and will be determined not to make it 4 finals losses in a row. This matchup reminds me a bit of the Washington-Oregon rematch that's happening this Friday, with the loser of the first game having gone scorched earth to the point that many are favoring them to get revenge. Although I wouldn't be surprised if Linganore took this, I think Oakdale is being a bit overlooked here. It's not like they've struggled since the Linganore game; they've scored over 40 points in every game since that one and have scored 49 or more every game IN THE PLAYOFFS! Now, Linganore's defense will definitely be more stout than the other 4 teams they've faced but it is clear just how much Oakdale's offense is clicking. With that machine well in motion, and sharpened by early season quality non-con tests, I see Oakdale coming in fully bought in and pulling out state title #2 in a shootout. Oakdale 42-37
2A: 2 Stephen Decatur vs. 5 Huntingtown Massey Prediction: Huntingtown 38-20
The appetizer for the 3A final's main course. This looks to be an electric battle of QBs: the 'Hawks' Brycen Coleman vs. the 'Canes' Evan Kuntz. Neither are your traditional passer, they are both excellent athletes who will make plays with their legs just as much as they do their arms. It will likely come down to which QB's supporting cast is the toughest and can overpower the other side, and both teams made huge plays in that regard last week, with Decatur putting up some dominant special teams plays against Milford Mill while HTown went up against a Walkersville team that had been cruising in trench play the last few weeks and punched them in the mouth. I'm not gonna act like this pick is one well informed by intensive film study, rather on a gut feeling: I've felt since the beginning that this is Decatur's year. Huntingtown's got a lot of youth and should be right back here next year, this go around however ends with Coleman and co. hoisting the trophy after a hard-fought 48 minutes. Decatur 28-21
2A/1A: 1 Calvert vs. 3 Dunbar Massey Prediction: Dunbar 35-19
The lone class where I hit both teams in my pre-playoff state final picks. I picked Calvert to win this hypothetical matchup 4 weeks ago, and while I haven't exactly reversed my opinion, I think it would require a herculean effort involving the Cavaliers dragging the Poets down into a slugfest - which, as themamba will tell you, they do tend to be good at doing. Calvert played North Point better than anyone else has so far, and so I could certainly see them punching the Poets in the mouth. With that being said, that was a very impressive performance by the Poets going all the way to the southern tip of MD and rolling offensively against a very good Patuxent. History is on the line here with the Poets set to break SV's all-time state title record. I will give this one to them. Even still, though, the 2A/1A has come a long way from two years ago when Dunbar steamrolled their way to the title. More and more teams have been rising up to the challenge, but to Dunbar's credit, they've bested them all so far. Dunbar 26-14
1A: 1 Fort Hill vs. 2 Mountain Ridge Massey Prediction: Fort Hill 37-20
I did say in my pre-playoff predictions that the MR-Allegany game in Week 11 would determine who got to face FH here. I had hoped Allegany would pull it off, but alas, it is the Warriors-Cavaliers of the MPSSAA 1A once again. I must say, it would be hilarious if MR somehow pulls off the upset here, against quite possibly the best FH team in history, when MR's all-time best team couldn't pull it off last year. It's not happening, but best of luck to the Miners! Fort Hill 49-24

I would have been 5 for 6 having North Point over Mervo. Didn't think anyone could stop the Eagles this year.
