Howard County
My newest venture is overall state championships, by county, by decade. Do you know which county in MD has won more state championships since 1990 than any other, over the last 30 years? You have the big 3 (all that have had more than double the amount of teams HoCo has had over the last 30 years) - MoCo, PG, and Baltimore counties, but it’s neither of the three. Baltimore City, no. Howard County has won more boys and girls MPSSAA state championships than any other county in the state since 1990, with 290 - 10 more than MoCo, and 88 more than PG. Howard County is also the only county in the state to place more than 2 schools among the 10 schools in MPSSAA history in overall state championships won, with four among the top 10 - Oakland Mills, Glenelg, River Hill and Centennial. In all, HoCo has won 352 state titles, including 2 in the 60s, 8 in the 70s, 52 in the 80s, a state-high 111 in the 90s, 105 in the 00s, and 74 in the 10s.

Howard County
There are 21 individual programs in Howard County that rank among the top 5 in MPSSAA state titles won in its respective sport, including 4 that have won more than any other in MPSSAA history - Mt Hebron Girls Lacrosse (15), River Hill Girls Soccer (13), Oakland Mills Boys Track & Field (13), and Oakland Mills Boys Soccer (12). Five other Howard County programs have rank at the top since their respective programs have competed in the MPSSAA - Oakland Mills Boys Cross Country (12), River Hill Boys Soccer (9), Oakland Mills Boys Indoor Track (8), River Hill Boys Cross Country (8), and Marriotts Ridge Golf (7). Three others rank second in their respective sport in state titles won - Centennial Volleyball (14), Mt Hebron Girls Basketball (7), and Hammond Wrestling Dual Meet champions (4), who is tied with two others for second.
In addition to those 12 respective programs, spread out among the 20 sports (not including Boys and Girls Swimming & Diving, which most MPSSAA schools don’t compete in), three others rank among top 3 in their respective sport - with both Centennial and Glenelg Girls Soccer tied for 3rd in the sport with 6 state titles, and Glenelg Baseball (5), who is also tied with two others for 3rd. Glenelg Girls Lacrosse (5) ranks 4th in its sport, while Wilde Lake Boys Soccer (8) and Atholton Boys Indoor Track (5), are tied for 5th, as is Centennial Boys Lacrosse, Glenelg Boys Lacrosse, and Mt Hebron Boys Lacrosse, all who share the 5th spot for most in that sport, with 4 a piece. In addition to those 21 programs that rank among the top 5 in their respective sport, 7 others rank among the top 10 in their niche - Wilde Lake Football 6 (tied for 6th), Marriotts Ridge Girls Lacrosse 3 (tied for 6th), Hammond Girls Soccer 3 (tied for 6th), Centennial Boys Soccer 7 (tied for 7th), Oakland Mills Wrestling 3 (tied for 7th), Glenelg Boys Indoor Track 4 (tied for 8th), and Long Reach Girls Track & Field 5 (tied for 9th).
The following are 15 HoCo programs that rank among the top 3 in their respective sport among all classifications, and includes the number of state titles won, and it’s ranking in the MPSSAA in all-time history; Eight of the ten below either rank #1 in overall state titles won in that sport, or rank #1 since that respective program began. Of the other two, one stood at the top with two others until two years ago, and the other has won more state titles in the sport over the last 30 years.
Mt Hebron Girls Lacrosse 15 (1st) > Ranked #1 in the country 6 times, ranking 2nd in the nation in most national champions won, trailing only McDonogh. The Vikes are just 1 of 4 non-MPSSAA Field Hockey programs time win at least 15 state titles since 1990, joining Eleanor Roosevelt Girls Track & Field with 15, and trailing only Eleanor Roosevelt Girls Indoor Track (19) and Dunbar Boys Basketball (16).
River Hill Girls Soccer 13 (1st) > The Hawks have won more than double of the amount of state titles in its sport since its program began than the second best in the category, Middletown, who has won 6 since 1996. River Hill Girls Soccer have won one more state title than Oakland Mills Boys Soccer, to rank #1 overall in the sport in MPSSAA history, boys and girls included.
Oakland Mills Boys Track & Field 13 (1st) > Not only have the Scorpions won more Boys Track & Field state titles than any other MPSSAA school among all classifications since the sport began in 1952, but nearly doubles the amount of the next most won, with Middletown and Old Mill both winning 7, since the program began in 1974.
Oakland Mills Boys Soccer 12 (1st) > The Scorpions tank #1 on the pitch. The Scorpions have won a state title on the pitch in four of the last five decades, winning 5 state championships in the 80s. The Scorpions have won three more state titles than the next best in the sport, Bowie and River Hill, who have both won 9.
Oakland Mills Boys Cross Country 12 (2nd) > Though the Scorpions rank 2nd in this category, it must be noted that they’ve won more state titles in its sport than any other MPSSAA school since its program began in 1973, as Hereford, the only school to rank ahead of the Scorps overall, won more than half (8 of their 15) of their state titles before the Scorpions program even began.
Centennial Volleyball 14 (tied for 2nd) > The Eagles ranked tied for the most state titles in volleyball in MPSSAA history until 2018 (was alone at the top prior to ‘15 season), when Williamsport broke a tie with the Eagles and Smithsburg. The Eagles join Mt Hebron Girls Lacrosse as the only HoCo programs to win at least 14 state championships in their sport.
River Hill Boys Soccer 9 (tied for 3rd) > The Hawks have won more state titles on the pitch than any other school in MPSSAA history since its program began in 1996. The Hawks won 8 of 11 state titles from ‘97 through ‘07. The Hawks are just 1 of 3 programs (Oakland Mills and Whitman, both with 9 also) to win 9 state titles since 1985, 11 years before the Hawks first season.
River Hill Boys Cross Country 8 (tied for 3rd) > The Hawks have won more state titles than any other cross country team since it’s program began in 1996. The Hawks and Oakland Mills are the only cross country teams that have won 8 or more cross country state titles since the Scorps first season in ‘73.
Marriotts Ridge Golf 7 (2nd) > The Mustangs rank 2nd overall on the fairway and greens in MPSSAA history in state titles won, but match #1 Churchill since its program began 14 years ago, with 7. The ‘Stangs won 7 straight, from ‘12 through ‘18, until seeing that streak get snapped last fall.
Oakland Mills Boys Indoor Track 8 (2nd) > The Scorpions rank 2nd all-time in boys indoor track state titles, trailing only Fairmont Heights (10), but sit alone at the top in the MPSSAA in state championships won over the last 30 years, since 1990, with all 8 coming since then.
Those ten, in my mind, are the top 10 programs among all of the 228 (19 sports, 12 schools) Howard County individual programs the county produces each year.
Mt Hebron Girls Basketball 7 (2nd) > The Vikings lady cagers rank alone at 2nd all-time in state championships won on the hardwood, one behind state leader Eleanor Roosevelt, who has won 8. The Raiders broke the tie in 2018. The Vikings won 5 state titles in 6 years from ‘86 through ‘91.
Glenelg Girls Soccer 6 (tied for 3rd) > The Gladiators are tied with Centennial and four others for 3rd most state championships on the pitch, trailing only River Hill and Middletown, the latter who has won one more than both the Glads, Eagles, and the others. The Gladiators ‘3-peated’ from ‘06 through ‘08.
Centennial Girls Soccer 6 (tied for 3rd) > The Eagles, as stated just above, are tied with Glenelg and four others for 3rd most state titles on the pitch in MPSSAA history, trailing only River Hill and Middletown. The Eagles produced three separate back-to-back championship runs - ‘83-84, ‘91-92, and ‘94-95.
Glenelg Baseball 5 (tied for 3rd) > The Gladiators trail only Arundel (10) and Brunswick (6) in state championships won on the diamond in MPSSAA history, just one behind the latter for second most state titles won.
Hammond Wrestling Dual Meet 4 (tied for 2nd) > Only Damascus (10) has won more Dual Meet state titles than the Bears, Owings Mills, and Southern of Garrett County, all of whom have won 4. The Bears won their four state titles in an 11 year period from ‘96 through ‘06.
Four others could make the argument with the latter two in those that rank among the top 3 in their sport in state championships for top 15 program status in HoCo history, in my mind, and it’s the quarter that follows;
Wilde Lake Football 6 (tied for 6th) > The Wildecats are just 1 of 8 schools to win at least 6 state championships on the gridiron, joining legendary programs Seneca Valley, Damascus, Dunbar, Allegany, Fort Hill, Springbrook, and Linganore in that group. The Cats have won half of the 12 state titles the entire county has ever won in football.
Wilde Lake Boys Soccer 8 (tied for 5th) > The Cats are just 1 of 6 schools in the state to win at least 8 state titles on the pitch. Several state title chances were wiped away by county competition, with Oakland Mills ranking first in the category, River Hill tied for third, and Centennial tied for seventh, giving the county four teams with a tied for 7th or better slot among state competition.
Glenelg Baseball 5 (4th) > The Gladiators are just 1 of 5 schools in MPSSAA history to win at least 5 state titles on the diamond, joining Arundel, Brunswick (6), St Michaels (5), and North East Cecil (5), one behind Brunswick for a tie for 2nd most.
Centennial Boys Soccer 7 (tied for 7th) > The Eagles are just 1 of 8 schools to win at least 7 state titles on the pitch. The Eagles won all 7 state championships in a 13 year period from ‘93 through ‘05. The Eagles, like Oakland Mills, River Hill and Wilde Lake, have divvied up state titles among themselves over the years.

The Oakland Mills Boys Track & Field team won the school’s 59th state championship in the school’s 48 year history, led by a trio of runners who each won a pair of gold medals in their individual championship heats. Junior Judson Lincoln IV won the 200 and 400 meter sprints, including running a personal best 48.35 in the 400. Lincoln was undefeated in both the 200 and 400 this season. Senior Baidy Ba took home the gold in both the 800 and 3200, setting both the MPSSAA 3A state championship record, and the Howard County all-time mark, with a time of 9:11.32 in the 3200. Senior Isiah Rucker swept the hurdle events, winning at both 110 and 300 meters. The Scorpions 4x200 team won the gold, with another quartet of sprinters - Trevin McHargh, Quincy Julien, Kanye Holland, and Shane King.
Overall, the Scorpions boys won seven gold medals, and ten total medals, while also medaling in the 4x400, triple jump, and high jump, and adding a fourth place finish in the long jump. Lincoln, Ba, Rucker, and John Tatum IV, won a silver medal in the 4x400, Ba’s third race within a hour, after winning the 800 and 3200. Rules prevented Ba from competing in the 1600, a race that very well may have given him three gold medals on the day. Lincoln won the bronze in the 100, giving him four medals on the day. Sophomore Abdul Hassan won the bronze medal in the high jump.
The Scorpions extended their state best mark to 14 state championships in Boys Track & Field, a sport that was awarding state titles by the MPSSAA twenty years before the school on Kilimanjaro even opened. No other school in the state has won more than half of the Scorpions 14 state titles since it opened. In track terms, the Scorpions have lapped everyone, at least once. Oakland Mills 59 overall state titles in its girls and boys programs rank fifth best in MPSSAA history, behind only Severna Park (79), Eleanor Roosevelt (72), Hereford (69), and Middletown (67). The Scorpions have had the most successful boys athletic program in MPSSAA history, by far, with 53 state titles on the boys side, 19 more than the next best, Hereford. With the crown, Oakland Mills became the first school in MPSSAA history to win at least 15 state championships in each of the three sports seasons.
The Scorpions sprinters continue a legacy which now boasts having won at least one state title in each of the last five decades. Former track legend Ivan Walker, and his pair of former assistants Sam Singleton and Brian Winfield, built a dynasty, one in which current coach Chris Brewington is intent on maintaining. Lincoln became the tenth Scorpion to win a gold medal in the 200, and the eighth to win gold in the 400. Ba became the sixth in school history to win the 800, and just the third to win the 3200. Scorpions have won the state title in the 100 nine times. Saturday, the Scorpions won gold in the 200, 400, 800, 3200, 110 hurdles, and 300 hurdles, and placed third in the 100. The Scorpions won the 4x200, and placed second in the 4x400. The Scorpions have had a litany of runners win gold medals on sprint relay teams, as their 4x100 teams have won 10 gold medals, their 4x200 teams have now won 10 gold medals, and their 4x400 teams have won 12 state championships. The Scorpions 2000 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams still hold the record in the 1A classification, and Kyle Farmer, a member of both of those teams, still holds the 1A marks in both the 200 and 400. Coach Brewington was a member of Howard’s 4x100 in 2007, which still holds the 2A mark, with a time of 42.18.
The legacy of the Oakland Mills Scorpions sprinters lives on. A legacy unequaled in MPSSAA history.
